San Juan Mayor Pro Tem Announces Bid For 49th District

San Juan Capistrano's Mayor Pro Tem Brian Maryott has thrown his hat in the ring for the 49th District Congressional Race, he announced Wed.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA — Another Republican has thrown his hat in the ring to try and take Congressman Darrell Issa's now vacant seat on the 49th District Congressional District. That seat has been held by Issa since 2001.

Maryott, who is a Certified Financial Planner, retired last week from his position as a Regional Manager and Senior Vice President with Wells Fargo Advisors to focus on public service. His retirement capped a 25-year career centered on helping families and businesses with their financial planning and managing large and complex markets for two major firms. Two years ago, Maryott self-funded his council race, and he indicated that he expects to invest substantial personal funds into the Congressional race. Unlike his council race, however, Maryott said that he will be actively fundraising for this endeavor.

“We often hear people say that Washington is broken,” said Maryott, “but that is an exaggeration.” “The problem,” he continued, “is that so many high-profile legislators from both parties seem to have abandoned any willingness or interest in real collaboration. Not everyone in the corporate world sits down at a meeting with the same perspective on the critical issues – but my goodness, at least there is a decorum and mutual respect.”

Maryott is a long-time Republican, however, in the late 1980s he worked for four years as Chief of Staff for a Democrat state legislator in Massachusetts. “Both parties are full of passion, noble ideas, and committed and well-intentioned people,” said Maryott.

“Unfortunately the non-stop food fight is getting in the way of making progress on some very high-stakes issues for Americans.” Maryott shared that a deep respect for our personal freedoms and individual responsibility, taken together with a reverence for our Constitution and Bill of Rights, will underpin his considerations in Congress.

As for his strategic priorities, Maryott cited the overall safety and well-being of Americans as the number one goal of the federal government. “A strong national defense and a clear and purposeful foreign policy is a paramount concern.” Additionally, Maryott views the country’s approach to immigration as “chaotic and disingenuous,” and he is anxious to dig into the issue. He also considers working on our “failed social services programs” another top priority.

“The healthiest situation is when people can pull themselves up by their bootstraps, and sometimes we need to at least give them the straps,” Maryott said. “But striking the right balance is critical, and we aren’t doing that now. The result is a debilitating dependency on the government that has developed in so many of our poorer neighborhoods in both inner city and rural areas - and while it might soothe the conscience to spend billions on social programs, they have largely failed and are not truly helping anyone.”

“It’s a financial miss for sure, but far more importantly it’s a human tragedy,” added Maryott.

Maryott earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from American International College in Springfield, MA. He and his wife Michele have lived in Southern California since 1995, and they currently reside in San Juan Capistrano with their three children.

If he wins, Maryott would nominate a replacement for his seat on the San Juan Capistrano city council, he said.
