SJC City Council Race Begins

Three potential candidates pull nominating papers on the very first day.

On the first day when prospective candidates for San Juan Capistrano City Council could pick up nominating papers, three people did.

The first was incumbent Sam Allevato, who’s been on the council since 2004 and has served as mayor twice.

Laura Freese is the other incumbent whose seat is open in the Nov. 6 election. She has not publicly indicated whether she will run for re-election.

. Should an incumbent decide not to run again, that date is extended to Aug. 15.

Two potential challengers also picked up nominating papers Monday, residents Tom Marantz and Melissa Abbott.
