The SJC 25 Stock Report, Dec. 18, 2011
How are the big companies in our small town faring this week?

Editors Note – This is a new feature for San Juan Capistrano Patch. We may not have any Fortune 500 companies based in our town, but that doesn't mean they don't have a presence. The health of these companies has an impact on our local economy. Just ask Mission Viejo, which has a "big box" shopping center with an abandoned Borders, CompUSA and Linens 'N Things. With that, we present the San Juan Capistrano 25.

It was a bearish week on Wall Street, with concerns about Europe's economic health still looming. Here's a few news briefs about the companies in our town:
Costco reported strong first-quarter results, partly because it raised membership fees 10 percent in November. The higher prices at the gas pump also contributed to a stronger bottomline.
FedEx saw a 76 percent increase in quarterly profits. It plans to buy 27 of the latest, fuel-efficient Boeing aircraft.
McDonald's spent $460,000 lobbying the federal government in the third quarter, on issues including immigration, menu labeling and debit card fees.
A French semi-conductor company has bought a San Diego factory where it plans to build super-efficient solar panels. Soitec S.A. has contracts to build or supply 300 megawatts of solar-power projects in Southern California that will sell the electricity to Sempra Energy's San Diego utility.
