The SJC 25 Stock Report, Jan. 1, 2012

After a roller coaster year, stocks ended on a flat note.

Editors Note  – In this feature, we check on the health of the Fortune 500 companies which have a presence in San Juan Capistrano. 

Reuters called the stock market's performance this year a "long ride to nowhere." That's because the S&P 500 finished virtually flat on the year. It moved a whopping .003 percent, the flattest performance since 1947.

The National Restaurant Association says 2012 will be a good year for restaurant owners. That's good news for Yum! Brands, Starbucks and McDonalds on our list, and other publicly traded companies that don't yet crack the Fortune 500, such as .

Although the retail sector lagged behind the Dow in general, several of the SJC Patch 25 were standouts this year, reports Fox Business. Among them are Ross Stores, Dollar Tree and TJ Maxx (Marshall's). Losers included Staples, Gap and Sears.

Chevron received a third citation for a November oil spill off the coast of Brazil. ANP, Brazil's oil industry watchdog, may fine Chevron as much as $26.8 million per citation.

Forbes magazine named Kroger, parent company of Ralph's, "America's most generous company." Kroger contributed 10.9 percent of its $589 million pre-tax profits—or $64 million—to charity in 2009.
