Two More Want to Enter Council Race
Roy Byrnes, a former mayor, and local mom Kim McCarthy, both regular critics of the current council, pull papers Wednesday.

Two more potential candidates for San Juan Capistrano City Council – often critics of the current council – indicated Wednesday they may run for one of two seats open in November.
Former Mayor Roy Byrnes, who served on the City Council from 1972-76, is back. Both he and resident Kim McCarthy pulled nominating papers today.

The two open seats are currently held by Allevato and Councilwoman Laura Freese, who has not indicated whether she will run for re-election.
and statements of qualification for office, according to a city press release. The deadline extends to Aug. 15 if an incumbent decides not to run again and does not file papers by the deadline.

So far, none of the potential candidates has turned in his nominating papers with the needed 20-30 supporting signatures of city residents.
Councilmembers serve four-year terms. Byrnes is 88. He told Patch he believes in term limits and promised to not serve more than three terms.
