2 Dead In Fiery Bay Area Crash Linked To Homicide

The suspects are accused of a homicide and a carjacking in different counties before dying in a crash during a police pursuit.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — Two people died in a fiery crash in San Leandro early Monday morning following a homicide in Manteca and a carjacking in Oakland, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office spotted the suspect vehicle in Oakland and was pursuing it when the car swerved and hit a tree as the driver tried to avoid devices placed in its path to deflate tires.

A 14-year-old girl was trapped in the back seat but deputies were able to pull her out of the car before it burned. Deputies tried to save the driver and front seat passenger, both male, but flames engulfed the car before they could be rescued.

A gun was later found in the wreckage of the car.

The San Leandro Police Department issued an advisory at 4 a.m. telling drivers to avoid Davis Street because of the fatal crash. The wreck closed Davis between Orchard and Pierce avenues in both directions as investigators probed the scene. Traffic in San Leandro was diverted for several hours during the crash investigation.

The crime spree started in Oakland on Sunday with the carjacking. Investigators report that the stolen vehicle was associated with a woman's homicide at a Manteca business in San Joaquin County at around 10 p.m. Sunday night. She was shot to death. The suspect vehicle was back in Oakland Monday morning when the police pursuit began.
