Alleged Walmart Shooter Could Spend Life In Prison

"Due to the nature of the crime and Jaquez' criminal history as a third striker, he could face up to three life sentences if convicted.."

SAN LEANDRO, CA — A man charged with shooting another man in the neck at a San Leandro Walmart parking lot could spend the rest of his life in prison. Police report that 29-year-old Israel Jaquez has been charged with attempted murder. Also, "Due to the nature of the crime and Jaquez' criminal history as a third striker, he could face up to three life sentences if convicted of these new offenses," police said in a written statement.

The shooting happened on Sept. 16 around 12:30 p.m. Although he'd been shot, the victim was conscious and alert. He received emergency medical care at the scene, and then was transported to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley. He has since been released from the hospital.

Surveillance video led police to Jaquez, who was arrested in San Jose by San Leandro Police detectives.

The motive for the shooting is still under investigation. Jaquez remains in custody at Alameda County's Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
