SAN LEANDRO, CA — A Hayward man was arrested on suspicion of brandishing a gun and leading deputies on a freeway chase that eventually ended in a lengthy San Leandro standoff.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office Real Time Information Center used Automated License Plate Reader technology to locate the Hyundai in unincorporated Hayward. Deputies from the Eden Township Substation tried to stop the vehicle, but Harris fled, initiating a pursuit.

The pursuit came to an end when Harris attempted to exit northbound I-880 at Marina Boulevard in San Leandro and crashed into a barrier wall. Police say Harris refused to exit the vehicle and attempted to drive away, but the car was disabled in the collision.

The ACSO Special Response Unit arrived with the Sheriff's Office armored rescue vehicle, while the San Leandro Police Department deployed its armored rescue vehicle to contain Harris's car. Members of the Crisis Intervention Unit worked to establish communication with Harris to secure a peaceful surrender.

After an extended standoff, Harris surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. He was transferred to the custody of DPS.

No community members of law enforcement personnel were injured.
