Cal Basketball Star Gene Ransom Dies In Freeway Shooting: Report

The 1970s basketball legend died in a shooting on an Oakland freeway on Friday.

OAKLAND, CA — Gene Ransom, 65, a former U.C. Berkeley basketball legend, died in a fatal freeway shooting in Oakland on Friday night, according to the university and media reports.

Police responded to the crash just north of Oak Street on interstate 880, ABC7 News reported.

"We are shocked to hear the reports that Cal Athletics Hall of Famer Gene Ransom has been identified as a victim in a deadly freeway shooting," the university said in a statement to ABC7 News. "Our thoughts are with Gene's family and friends for this tragic loss. Gene was one of the greatest players in our men's basketball program's history, and he will be greatly missed."
