Car Crashes Into San Leandro Home, Hits Resident

The Sheriff's Office reports that the crash was intentional by the driver, who may have been suffering a mental health crisis.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — A possibly suicidal man crashed his car into a home in San Leandro on purpose Tuesday night, hitting one of the residents inside the home, according to Ray Kelly, Public Information Officer for the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. The person hit by the car was not hurt. The driver was taken away for a mental health evaluation.

Kelly reports that the home was being used as a residential care facility and has eight residents. The driver who crashed into the building is reportedly one of the residents.

The incident began around 9:45 p.m. when deputies on patrol spotted the car driving erratically. They tried to pull it over, but the driver kept going. Deputies continued to follow the vehicle, at what Kelly described as a low rate of speed. "On the 1100 block of Elgin Street, the driver directed his vehicle toward the residence and purposefully drove through the east exterior wall penetrating into the structure," Kelly said in a written release. "Deputies were able to detain the man inside his car inside the residence."
