Church On Bancroft To Cease Worship After 68 Years

San Leandro Community Church has decided to close as a worshipping community and use its resources in other ways.

 

The San Leandro Community Church will disband its congregation and celebrate the end of 68 years of worship at special service and reception at 2 pm on Saturday, March 24.

"At this point in the life cycle of the congregation, it is time to close," according to a statement released Tuesday.

San Leandro Community Church has been dually aligned with American Baptist Churches, USA and United Church of Christ. In 1992 it succeeded the Bancroft Avenue Baptist Church, which was founded in 1944. 

The statement said members decided to honor the legacy of of these last seven decades by "dispersing our resources, including ourselves, into new arenas of ministry."

For the time being, members say the church building will continue to host several groups: 

  • Building Futures for Women and Children;
  • Children’s Montessori Adventure;
  • Friendship House Association of American Indians, Inc. of San Francisco’s youth program;
  • Hahn Saeng Myung Korean Methodist Church of the East Bay;
  • Healthy at Every Size Think Tank;
  • Heart to Heart;
  • International Christian Worship Center; and
  • Lavender Seniors of the East Bay.
