SAN LEANDRO, CA — Two burglary suspects were arrested Wednesday afternoon after fleeing from a shopping center in San Leandro and leading officers on a chase onto Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland.

Sergio Chavez-Silva, 23, and Byron Perez-Olivera, 30, both of Oakland, are in custody after a pursuit that began at about 1:50 p.m., according to San Leandro police.

Two police sergeants had spotted a gold-colored Honda Accord speeding out of the Washington Plaza shopping center and tried to stop it after seeing its back window had been smashed out and several people were pointing at it as it fled, police said.

The pursuit ensued onto westbound Highway 580, with the Honda exiting and re-entering the highway a few times as its driver tried to elude police.

The vehicle eventually exited at the Seminary Avenue exit and crashed into another vehicle in a construction zone. The two people in the car, later identified as Chavez-Silva and Perez-Olivera, ran away and fled across the highway, according to police.

Chavez-Silva was eventually found hiding in bushes on the highway off-ramp, and Perez-Olivera was found walking near a gas station on Seminary Avenue.

Other officers investigating what happened in the Washington Plaza shopping center learned the suspects had broken into a parked truck and fled after being confronted by witnesses who smashed out the back window of the Honda as it fled, police said.

Both suspects were arrested on suspicion of auto burglary and police said they will seek additional charges against Chavez-Silva for driving the Honda and trying to evade officers. Perez-Olivera is also being held on suspicion of violating his probation, police said.
