Man Arrested For Weekend Shooting In San Leandro

SAN LEANDRO, CA – A 22-year-old Hayward man has been charged with attempted murder by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office for a shooting that occurred in San Leandro Saturday, police said Thursday.

Noel Mejia allegedly shot a victim on Saturday at about 8 p.m. in the 2000 block of West Avenue 135th, according to police.

At the scene, officers found the victim, suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to a hospital and has since been released and is recovering.

The suspect had already fled when officers arrived. After investigating, officers were able to identify Mejia as a suspect, police said.

Detectives were able to obtain surveillance video that captured the incident as well as the suspect vehicle, a white Nissan Maxima.

A day later, officers responded to an unrelated hit-and-run collision involving the suspect vehicle.

When officers arrived at that incident, they learned the Nissan's occupants had fled the scene, according to police.

After searching the area, officers located the three occupants, with one of them being Mejia.

He was booked into the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, police said.

"The swift and thorough work of our officers and detectives led us to the arrest of this dangerous suspect," Lt. Isaac Benabou said in a statement. "Information obtained within the first few hours of any incident
is critical to the outcome of the investigation. We are pleased that the suspect is in custody and we are hoping for a full recovery of the victim."
