Proud parents Angela and Sherwin Bacungan welcomed baby Angelica at 9:15 a.m. She was the third baby for the happy couple. Angelica weighed in at 7 lbs 1 oz and measured 19 inches. She will join her four-year-old sister and two-year-old brother who were both born at the Hayward Medical Center.
“Right after Angelica was born, they told us that she was the 1,000th baby,” said Angela.
Angela and Sherwin are both Kaiser Permanente members from Milpitas. Sherwin is a home health nurse for Kaiser Permanente and was previously a nurse at the Hayward Medical Center since 2007.
The Kaiser Permanente San Leandro Medical Center opened on June 3, and the first baby was born in the early evening on the very first day. Since, its Labor and Delivery Department has been busy delivering babies, at average of about 9.3 babies per day. It’s on pace to exceed 300 baby deliveries in September, which will be a new record for a single month.
Sherwin has yet to sleep at home since the birth of his new daughter. He felt very comfortable spending the night on the pull out couches in the private hospital room and the parents are taking advantage of the in-room Get Well Network video system to watch TV and order room service.
“The nurses and the services we received here are excellent,” said Sherwin. “The nurses treat us so well and are very nice to my wife and baby.”
The new medical center has all private rooms including a level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, labor and delivery suites, and can accommodate high risk deliveries.
