Police Release Photo of Van Involved in Rolling Shootout

Police believe the van was rented and are asking rental agencies throughout the area to check for bullet holes.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — San Leandro police are searching for the driver of a black 2015 Dodge Caravan they believe was involved in a shootout and chase along city streets Thursday that left three people injured.

Investigators believe at least one suspect in the Caravan and the driver of a Nissan Altima exchanged gunfire at about 12:30 p.m. in the area of MacArthur and Foothill boulevards near Interstate Highway 580.

During the ensuing chase, the Altima ended up crashing head-on into an elderly couple's Toyota Prius in the 300 block Dowling Boulevard, according to police.

After the crash, officers found a male suspect near the Nissan suffering from a gunshot wound that didn't appear to be life-threatening. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and arrested on suspicion of being
involved in the shooting and reckless driving, said police spokesman Lt. Robert McManus.

The Alameda County district attorney's office today filed several felony charges against the man who was driving the Nissan, police said.

That suspect, a 33-year-old Oakland man, is being guarded by police at the hospital while he recovers from his wounds, police said.

The couple in the Toyota suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital, where the wife was listed in stable condition and the husband was listed in critical condition Monday, according to police.

On Monday, police released a photo of the Caravan taken from security camera footage.

"Investigators think that this could be a rental vehicle and are asking for employees of rental car agencies throughout the Bay Area to check for recent returns with gunfire damage to similar vehicles, as well as check
current rentals for vehicles that match the description that have not yet been returned," San Leandro police said in a statement.
