A car burglary suspect was arrested after police chased him from San Leandro to Oakland, where he crashed into a liquor store this morning, according to police. Officers spotted the suspect while doing surveillance in the 1000 block of MacArthur Boulevard just after 5 a.m. He broke into a car there and then got into a silver Audi and left, police said.
Another San Leandro police officer tried to pull the Audi over, but the suspect fled, driving erratically at high speed onto westbound Interstate Highway 580, police said. The officer eventually decided it wasn’t safe to continue the pursuit and got off the highway at the Keller Avenue exit. But when he left the highway, he noticed the Audi crashed into Tony’s Market at 7980 Mountain Blvd., police said.
As the officer stopped, a witness pointed out Joey Haines, 31, trying to walk away from the crash scene, police said. The officer arrested Haines and searched the Audi, finding stolen property and a loaded .40-caliber handgun. Haines, an Oakland resident, was booked on suspicion of auto burglary, evading police and being a convicted felon with a firearm, police said. He will be arraigned later this week.
