The home sustained structural damage to 40 percent of the property and heavy smoke damage throughout.
A neighboring house sustained minor exterior damage to the front of the residence.
If the flames and smoke were hazardous enough, firefighters also dealt with downed, energized and arching power lines directly in front of the house. A PG&E crew cut the utilities.
The fire started in the converted garage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
