According to a history account on the Norooz Pasadena site:

Nowrooz literally means "new day" in the Persian language, and the festivities mark the beginning of the solar year as well as the New Year on Iranian calendars as well as several others. 

During Persian New Year, each household sets up a table of items that symbolize spring and Norooz, known as Haft-Seen, and family members gather and pray around the table, waiting for Spring to arrive, according to Norooz Pasadena.
