Former Montebello Police Corporal Charged With 2014 Assault of Suspect

Mark Jason Ryan, 37, is accused of assaulting a tagging suspect, slamming the suspect into the pavement on Halloween 2014.

LOS ANGELES, CA - A former Montebello police corporal, who's accused of assaulting a tagging suspect on Halloween 2014, surrendered Wednesday on a felony charge.

Mark Jason Ryan, 37, was released after posting $35,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned May 4 on a felony count of assault under the color of authority, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Ryan allegedly slammed a suspect's head into the pavement while responding to a call of two men tagging in the 2100 block of West Whittier Boulevard on Oct. 31, 2014.

If convicted of the charge, Ryan could face up to three years in state prison, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Montebello police confirmed that Ryan left the department this year, but declined to release any other information regarding his employment.
