Keynote speaker will address the women of eagle scouts at the 20th annual brunch

KATHRYN BARGER, COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES SUPERVISOR, 5TH DISTRICT TO ADDRESS WOMEN OF EAGLE SCOUTS AT ANNUAL LUNCHEON

Guests at the twentieth annual Greater Los Angeles Area Council of Boy Scouts of America Women of Eagle Scout Brunch, Wind Under Their Wings, will be treated to an elegant and motivating event on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the San Gabriel Country Club in San Gabriel. A reception will be held at 10:30 a.m. followed by a brunch and the program at 11:15 a.m. The celebration will end at 1:30 p.m.

This year the brunch will honor founding member Mona Mapel; founding BSA Staff member, Sue Newton, and founding committee members Lyle “Tinker” Bayle (in memory), Jeanine Cushman, Judy Davis, Sallie Determan, Joan Dietrick, Gwen Krogen, Janet Orswell, Jean Simpson (in memory), and Valerie Gumbiner Weiss. These women’s vision to honor the women “behind” the Eagle Scouts celebrates twenty years of laughs, joy, and memorable speakers who have included Lois Lindsay (mother of astronaut Steven Lindsay), Linda Ryker and Mona Walley (mothers of Oregon Scouts who were awarded the BSA Medal of Valor),

Roger Corman (movie producer), Jane Olson (co-chair of the Californina Committee of Human Rights Watch, Pat Boone (singer), Patrick McCormick (two time gold medalist in diving), Suzanne Osmond (aunt of Donny and Marie Osmond), Chuck Henry (KNBC Newsman), Kerry McCluggage (Paramount Producer), Robbie Britt (singer), Bruce Weiner (KABC Cameraman), Jim Ellis (Dean of USC Marshall School of Business), Mark Wallengren (DJ on KOST 103.5), Phillip Sanchez (Pasadena Police Chief), James Nash (CBS News Senior Director), C.B. Sheipe (author), Andy Barth (former chairman of Capital Guardian Trust Co), John Semcken (Top Gun Navy Fighter Pilot), and Raymond Bell (CBS News Producer).

Local Boy Scouts will greet guests during the hosted reception and will usher them into the dining room for a delicious brunch. Scouts from Lucky Baldwin District, Troop 373, under the direction of Martin Deveau, will lead the pledge of allegiance, followed by a memorable rendition of the National Anthem played on the bugle. There will also be instrumental and vocal musical entertainment throughout the reception and brunch provided by students from La Canada High School.

Brian Byrne, a senior at San Marino High School, and an Eagle Scout from San Marino Troop 355 will share his experiences as a Tiger Cub up the path to the rank of Eagle. Highlights of his scouting career include attending Camp Cherry Valley in Catalina, several backpacking treks in the Sierra Nevada’s, local backpacking trips in the San Gabriel Mountains, and climbing Mt. Whitney and other peaks. For his Eagle Project, Brian repainted a large multi-purpose room of the Mackenzie-Scott Branch of the Boys and Girls Club of Pasadena and replanted their garden with California native plants. Brian is the son of John and Allison Byrne.

The Invocation will be presented by founding staff member, Sue Newton. Scout Executive of the Greater Los Angeles Area Council, Jeff Hunt, will give the annual “State of the San Gabriel Valley Council”. Jeff has over 32 years of professional experience and is the founder of the BSA Camp Card Program, which helps Scouts earn their way to go camp. Jeff’s passion is Scoutreach and creating opportunities for youth in disadvantaged areas to help them grow, develop and mature in reaching their full potential. He joins in partnership with the volunteers and staff of the Greater Los Angeles Area Council to deliver quality Scouting experiences to the young people of the communities they serve.

Capping the brunch will be a motivating talk presented by County Supervisor, 5th District, Kathryn Barger. Dedicated to providing effective, responsive representation to the residents of Los Angeles County, Kathryn began her career in public service as a college student intern in the office of Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and rose to become his Chief Deputy Supervisor in 2001, where she served until her election to the Board. During the course of her County career as chief policy advisor on Health, Mental Health, Social Service and Children’s issues, Kathryn provided leadership to deliver efficient and effective services and programs that have significantly improved the quality of life for foster children, seniors, veterans, the disabled and the mentally ill. Committed to keeping our neighborhoods and communities safe, she has worked with state and federal leaders along with our County District Attorney’s office, Sheriff, and other law enforcement agencies to implement tough laws and vital public safety initiatives. She is an advocate for the environment and efforts to preserve open space, enhance parks, trails, recreational programs and facilities; and strongly supports libraries and after-school programs to serve local communities. With a strong sense of fiscal responsibility and prudence, Kathryn is dedicated to providing vital county services while protecting financial resources as a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars. Kathryn was born and raised in the 5th District and comes from a family with deep roots in public service in Los Angeles County as well as the Boy Scouts of America program. She is married to, Eric, a retired Sheriff’s deputy and lives in the San Gabriel Valley.

This year’s committee under the leadership of Co-Chairmen, Connie Knott and Helen Kim Spitzer of San Marino; includes Avery Barth, Kathy Bayle, Ann Boutin, Janice Conzonire, Sallie Determan, Vicki Elliott, Mary Falkenbury, Lynn Hatashita-Jung, Ann Kunitake, Mona Mapel, Patricia Tom Mar, Leigh Olivar, Pam Osgood, Karen Wicke, Valerie Gumbiner Weiss, and Julie Wong Tam of San Marino; Kathy Vine of Temple City, Suko Gotoh of Glendale, Patricia Libby Thvedt of Altadena, and Ellen Chiechi and Janet Orswell of Arcadia. The committee is advised by Lucia Bernal. The committee welcomes the community to attend and honor the Women Behind the Eagle Scouts. The cost is $60 per person and includes pre-luncheon refreshments, brunch, mementos, and supports the Boy Scouts of America.
