Huntington, Local Museums to Hold Special Weekend

Five cultural institutions in the area will have special offers and events in celebration of the Getty's Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945-1980 initiative.

In case you need more motivation to explore the diverse displays at local institutions like the , you can get a unique art fix and possibly leave with a little more in your wallet on Jan. 21 and 22.

The Huntington and four other area museums are collaborating to offer a Regional Pacific Standard Time Weekend, in honor of the larger Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945-1980 initiative started by the Getty, according to a Huntington statement released Thursday.

The initiative, which began in October 2011 through $10 million in Getty Foundation grants, gathers over 60 Southern California cultural institutions for six months to tell the story of the birth, evolution and magnitude of the Los Angeles art scene.

Here is a rundown of the events and offers happening during the Regional Pacific Standard Time Weekend:


The Huntington will offer $3 off adult admission on Saturday Jan. 21 and Sunday Jan. 22.

Exhibits on display include:

Pacific Asia Museum
Two-for-one admission to 46 North Los Robles: A History of the Pasadena Art Museum, which "includes more than 100 modern and contemporary works of art shown at the Pasadena Art Museum in its groundbreaking exhibitions, including paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and documentation of performances," according to the event statement.

Norton Simon Museum
The Norton Simon will offer a curator-led tour of its exhibition Proof: The Rise of
Printmaking in Southern California by Associate Curator Leah Lehmbeck at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Armory Center for the Arts
Accidents in Abstract Painting, a special outdoor art performance, will feature Pasadena-based artist Richard Jackson, who will will fly and crash a remote controlled, model military jet plane, with a ten foot wing span, filled with paint into a 20-foot wall that reads, "Accidents in Abstract Painting." The performance will take place in Pasadena's Arroyo Seco at 4 p.m. on Jan. 22.

PMCA presents the opening reception for the exhibition L.A. Raw: Abject Expressionism in Los Angeles, 1945-1980 on Jan. 22, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for a special $5 admission.
