WHAT IS ALATEEN?
Alateen is part of the Al-Anon Family Groups, which is a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics. There are over 26,000 Al-Anon and Alateen groups in over 115 countries throughout the world. Al-Anon/Alateen is composed of nonprofessional, self-supporting mutual support groups. Group members share their knowledge and experience with each other but do not offer advice or counseling.
Alcoholism in the home affects not only the drinker, but every member of the family. Children are particularly affected because they depend on their parents to protect them from harm. It affects how young people are treated and it shapes their world. Alateen meetings are where teens learn alcoholism is a family disease, and where they can find support and understanding from people their own age who are going through similar difficulties.
