SAN MATEO, CA — San Mateo residents can safely dispose of unused or expired medications Saturday during a prescription drug take-back event at the San Mateo Elks Lodge.

Residents are encouraged to bring unused or expired pills and medication patches they no longer need. Proper disposal can help prevent medications from falling into the wrong hands and keep them out of landfills and waterways, organizers said.

During the nationwide take-back event in April 2026, approximately 642,410 pounds — more than 321 tons — of medication was collected for proper disposal, according to the announcement.
