Acterra’s Youth Education Program offers free teacher training workshops designed to be engaging and interactive. This year, we’ll be closing out Earth Month with a solutions-focused, hands-on curriculum exploring renewable energy and electric vehicles (EVs).
During the workshop, educators will explore climate change fundamentals, learn about the benefits of Zero Emissions Vehicles (ZEVs), and engage in interactive activities they can bring directly into their classrooms. The goal is to equip teachers with tools and confidence to help students understand clean energy solutions and consider choosing a ZEV as their first car when possible.

Increased Rattlesnake Activity Reported Across Bay Area As Spring Season Begins
Experts urge caution after recent California fatalities; local snake removal company sees surge in emergency calls
BAY AREA, CA — As temperatures rise this spring, rattlesnake activity is increasing across the Bay Area, prompting safety warnings for residents and outdoor enthusiasts.
Wildlife experts note that warmer weather marks the end of brumation—a reptile’s winter dormancy—bringing snakes out in greater numbers. This seasonal shift raises the likelihood of encounters in neighborhoods, hiking trails, and open spaces.
The warning comes amid reports of three recent rattlesnake-related fatalities in California, underscoring the potential danger of these encounters.
David Allen, owner of Got Snakes? Bay Area Snake Removal service, says his company has already seen a noticeable spike in urgent calls throughout the region.
“We’re getting emergency snake removal requests from all over the Bay Area right now,” Allen said. “People are finding rattlesnakes in backyards, garages, and even inside homes. It’s happening earlier and more frequently this season.”
Allen attributes the increase to a combination of warming temperatures and continued expansion into natural habitats. While rattlesnakes are not typically aggressive, they will defend themselves if threatened.
Recent Incidents Highlight Risk
The recent fatalities serve as a reminder that rattlesnake encounters can be serious, particularly for children, pets, and individuals who attempt to handle or kill the animal.
Rattlesnake Safety Tips
Officials and experts recommend the following precautions:
<ul>
<li>Stay alert when walking outdoors, especially in tall grass, rocky areas, or along trails</li>
<li>Keep a safe distance from any snake and do not attempt to approach it</li>
<li>Maintain yards by clearing debris and reducing rodent activity</li>
<li>Keep pets and children away from brush, woodpiles, and dense vegetation</li>
<li>Wear boots and long pants when hiking in snake-prone areas</li>
<li>Contact a professional for safe snake removal</li>
</ul>
What To Do If You Encounter a Snake
If you see a rattlesnake, remain calm and slowly back away. Avoid sudden movements and keep others at a safe distance. Professionals are trained to safely and humanely remove and relocate snakes when necessary.
“Most bites happen when people try to interact with the snake,” Allen added. “If you leave it alone and call a professional, you significantly reduce the risk.”

With more people spending time outdoors during the spring and summer months, awareness is key to preventing dangerous encounters. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take precautions both at home and in natural areas.
