Candidate-Filing Period Closes Aug. 10 In San Mateo County

This Friday deadline also applies to jurisdictions intending to place measures on the Nov. 6 ballot, election officials said.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA – Individuals interested in running for office in San Mateo County in the Nov. 6, 2018 Statewide General Election have until Friday, Aug. 10 to file candidacy papers, according to election officials.

City candidates should check the hours of their City Clerk’s offices, while all other candidates have until 5 p.m. to complete their candidate filings with the San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo.

This Aug. 10 deadline also applies to local jurisdictions intending to place measures on the November ballot, officials said.

Under the law, candidates are provided a 26-day window to file necessary paperwork, and the complete Roster of Candidates is posted online and updated every evening, the San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division said. To view the roster, go to Current Elections at www.smcacre.org.

If an eligible incumbent for an office does not qualify as a candidate by the close of business on Aug. 10, the candidate filing period for that particular office will be extended another five calendar days and will end at the close of business on Wednesday, Aug. 15. The eligible incumbent will not be permitted to file during the extended candidate filing period, according to the agency.

A 10-day public review period begins at the filing period deadline for each contest. During the review period, any registered voter or the Chief Elections Officer may seek a writ of mandate or an injunction if any material is found to be misleading or false.

The Nov. 6 Statewide General Election will be the second election conducted under the California Voter’s Choice Act. Traditional polling places will be replaced by Vote Centers, which will be open for voting for a greater period, and which will offer expanded voter services including voter registration, multilingual assistance, and disabled access voting options, the department said. Every registered voter will also receive a Vote-by-Mail Ballot, which can be returned with no postage required in any mailbox or special ballot drop boxes located throughout the county.
