CSM's McDaniel Extends Nation's Best JC Mark in the Shot Put

Over 600 athletes competed in Friday's Bob Rush Track and Field Invitational. Erin Harris a surprise for Bulldogs' swimming and diving team.

College of San Mateo sophomore Evan McDaniel improved upon his national community college leading shot put mark by nearly two feet, reaching 56 feet, 9 ¼ inches Friday as the Bulldog track and field team played host to 677 athletes from 19 colleges around the state at the annual Bob Rush Track & Field Invitational.

The meet was an early tune-up for the California Community College Athletic Association Championships, scheduled for May 17-18 at CSM’s College Heights Stadium.

McDaniel topped his previous season best of 54-10 ¼ and also upped his personal best of 55-10 ¼ (from 2012). He is now nearly three feet ahead of the next best mark on the JC/CC national list, 53-10 ½, by Skylar Arneson of Hutchinson CC (Kan.). McDaniel also ranks No. 18 among all college throwers, including those at NCAA schools.      

Sprinter Breanna Navarre, a South San Francisco High grad, finished third in the women’s 100 meters, again improving her best -- to 12.23 seconds -- which ranks No. 6 in Northern California (and second best among freshmen).

San Mateo went one-two in the men’s 400 meter hurdles with sophomore Roman Skovronski (53.79) and freshman Kevin Kutchera (54.90). They already rank first and third in Northern California, plus fourth and ninth nationally, with respective bests this year of 53.40 and 54.18.

Kutchera was also second in the 110 high hurdles in a personal best 15.03 to move up to No. 9 in the national rankings. Aaron Vaughn of Hartnell won the race in 14.76, No. 9 in the country.                

The CSM 400 meter relay team of Ryan Batte (Burlingame), Zach Cantu (Menlo-Atherton), Dijonn Williams (Menlo-Atherton), and Skovronski ran a season best 42.73, placing sixth among the 17 teams in the race and improving its Northern California ranking to No. 11.                

Skovronski had a busy day, anchoring the same quartet in the 1,600 meter relay team (3:20.89) with a 48.2 split and placing ninth (among 79 sprinters) in the 200 meters (22.49).                

San Mateo javelin throwers Anthony Capitulo (180-1) from South San Francisco and Scott Chisea (179-0) finished third and fourth, respectively. Sopruuchi Chima of Fresno City College won with a throw of 185-11. Capitulo ranks No. 6 nationally and No. 2 in the state with his best mark of 198-10. Chisea added nearly a foot to his previous best. He ranks No. 19 nationally and No. 10 in the state.                 

McDaniel finished the day with a discus throw of 153-9 for fourth place, slightly off his best of 156-7 at last week’s De Anza Invitational – which ranks No. 8 nationally and No. 3 in California. Winner Daniel Winter of West Valley threw a state-leading 169-2 (No. 3 in the USA).                

Mills High grad Moreen Pahulu finished fourth in the women’s javelin for CSM at 99-6. She has a best of 118-3 that ranks No. 13 nationally. She also placed fifth in the shot put (34-1 ½), ninth in the discus throw (108-1), and 13th in the hammer throw (100-10).

Swimming and Diving

Alvaro Andaluz won two events, including the 200 breast, in which he lowered his personal best to 2:12.12, as the College of San Mateo recorded several top marks in the Coast Conference Invitational at DeAnza on Friday. He also swam to victory in the 50 free (22.11).

"Al was tremendous underwater," Bulldogs' coach Randy Wright said. "He gained at least a half body off every wall. He also had a great run from lane 1 in the 50 free. It was a tight field, he actually tied for first and all eight times in the heat were below 23.2."

Derek Koo recorded a first in the 400 IM (4:30.34) and finished second to Andaluz in the 200 breast (2:19.70).

Sean Doker(200 fly, 2:11.11) and Jason Wong (100 back, 58.17) each recorded a second place finish.

CSM standout Miya Oto continued her winning ways, finishing first in the 50 free (25.34), 100 free (54.90) and 50 back (28.95).

Erin Harris placed first in the 1-meter diving event.

"This was Erin's first meet of the season," Wright said. "Her dive list is pretty extreme. Her degree of difficulty for all six dives is definitely higher than what we normally see.  She by no means had her best in each dive, but because her dives are so difficult she scores real high."

CSM has two divers this year, Harris and Jeremy Rodriquez. They both train at Highlands Rec Pool under the guidance of Kelly Winterbottom. 

"Kelly is great, she is a very experienced diver and coach and we are extremely lucky to have her on the staff," Wright said.
