Dime-Sized Hail, Winds, Thunderstorms Hit Bay Area: NWS

Drivers are urged to use extra caution during this weather.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — Heavy rain, hail and snow slammed the Bay Area on Monday morning as unusually cold April weather rolled into the region, the National Weather Service reported. Meanwhile, gusty winds and thunderstorm conditions were expected to last for much of the day before passing through.

"Dry and cool conditions are likely for Tuesday and into most of Wednesday before a weak, fast-moving system pushes through the region late Wednesday into early Thursday," the NWS said in a forecast discussion on Monday.

Several Bay Area locations received small hail, including San Jose, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Oakland and many cities in Santa Clara County. Some East Bay roadways were coated with hail at about 9:30 a.m. and social media users shared photos of lawns blanketed in hail and one child attempting to sled down the road in Oakland.

The National Weather Service said at one point on Monday morning that "dime size hail will be possible with this storm with roads quickly becoming covered with hail."

It snowed on Mount Hamilton and the Diablo Range, and a weather service spokesman said any peaks that are above 3,000 feet could see more snow Monday. The weather service issued an advisory for Santa Cruz County this morning reporting heavy showers and possible "dime sized" hail. They warned residents of lightning and said the storm might intensify.
