Driver Killed In Fiery Crash In SMC: Police

SAN MATEO, CA — A driver was killed Tuesday evening when a vehicle crashed into a light pole and caught fire in San Mateo, police said.

Officers responded around 7:16 p.m. to the intersection of Highway 92 and Alameda de las Pulgas after witnesses reported a gray Tesla traveling at a high rate of speed ran a red light, struck the center median, went airborne and crashed into a light pole before coming to rest through a chain-link fence, police said.

Police said the vehicle caught fire after the crash. Firefighters extinguished both the burning Tesla and a nearby tree that also caught fire.

The driver, who was the sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

It remains unclear why the driver ran the red light, according to the SMPD. A witness reported the driver appeared to be unconscious when the vehicle came to rest before it became engulfed in flames, officials said.

Investigators said the driver was believed to be the vehicle's registered owner, an 89-year-old man. The San Mateo County Coroner's Office will confirm his identity.

Investigators are continuing to determine what caused the crash. Police said no other people were injured.

Authorities initially closed Alameda de las Pulgas between Highway 92 and 20th Avenue while first responders worked at the scene. Police also warned of heavy, toxic smoke in the area.

The roadway reopened to traffic around 11:42 p.m., officials said.
