Driver Killed In Fiery Crash In SMC: Police

The vehicle struck a light pole before catching fire, police said.

SAN MATEO, CA — A driver was killed Tuesday evening when a vehicle crashed into a light pole and caught fire in San Mateo, police said.

Officers responded around 7:16 p.m. to the area of Highway 92 and Alameda de las Pulgas after receiving reports of a vehicle that traveled through the intersection before crashing into a light pole near the 1900 block of Alameda de las Pulgas, according to the San Mateo Police Department.

The vehicle caught fire following the collision, police said. The driver, who was the sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation, and police have not released the driver's identity.

Authorities initially closed Alameda de las Pulgas between Highway 92 and 20th Avenue while first responders worked at the scene. Police also warned of heavy, toxic smoke in the area.

The roadway reopened to traffic around 11:42 p.m., officials said.
