The Congregational Church of San Mateo (CCSM) was founded on May 4, 1864 during the Civil War times. Like most community groups, it struggled in the beginning, but now is a flourishing community under the leadership of a strong group of lay members and Rev. Penny Nixon.
The church's buildings changed over the years as the 1906 Earthquake and membership growth necessitated more space for worship. One newspaper article and photo from 1955 describes a renovation where the sanctuary was sliced into two sections.
