First Weekly Food Truck Farmers Market Starts New San Mateo Tradition

The San Mateo County Events Center, most notably used as fairgrounds, became a melting pot of diverse motorized cuisine Wednesday evening.

Indian Curry, New England clam chowder, Peruvian wraps, Japanese Sushi and Belgian waffles were in high demand as hundreds of people flocked to the fairgrounds for this twist on the traditional Farmers Market.

"It's a great cheap date", said Mike Salch, enjoying a California Roll purchased from We Sushi. Both Mike and his wife Cheryl enjoyed the diversity of the dining options present.

Seven food trucks came alongside two tents selling fruits and vegetables.

Most people, however, came mostly for the trucks, said vegetable vendor Flora Halog who reported low sales.

Some attendees complained of a lack of healthy or vegetarian options and stressed they would like to see more traditional vendors.

“I would like to see a more even split between food trucks and traditional stands,” remarked one visitor in line.

Still, the San Mateo County Event Center hails this event as a success and is attempting to get feedback from the first event to improve for future markets. Currently, the markets are scheduled for every Wednesday evening including the Fourth of July.
