GILROY, CA — The world’s garlic capital has emerged as a Bay Area coronavirus hot spot.

Gilroy leads all of Santa Clara County with an infection rate of 816 confirmed coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents, according to the Santa Clara County Public Health Department’s website.

San Jose is second on the list with an infection rate of 538 cases per 100,000 and Morgan Hill is third with an infection rate of 485.

San Jose has by far the county’s highest number of confirmed cases with 5,523 in a city of 1,026,658 million.

Gilroy is second with 453 confirmed cases but with a population of just 55,525.

Cupertino has the county’s lowest infection rate, with 104 per 100,000. The city of 60,614 has 63 confirmed COVID-19 infections.
