How is the BART strike affecting you?

BART labor negotiations left Bay Area commuters scrambling for alternate forms of transportation after approximately 2,300 workers went on strike following the expiration of their labor contracts at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday.

Pay, pension and medical costs are three of the biggest issues at hand between BART management and the two unions representing the strikers. And according to the San Jose Mercury News, “BART carries riders on 400,000 trips per weekday in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco and San Mateo counties — with nearly half of those trips made between the East Bay and San Francisco.”

Those riders were forced to commute in different ways on Monday. Traffic jams from the Bay Bridge toll plaza extended to nearly Walnut Creek as early as 7:30 a.m., also according to the San Jose Mercury News.
