Inmate Escapes in San Mateo, Caught With Help of Local PD: Police
BREAKING: Police say the man is a sex offender.
SAN MATEO, CA — San Mateo police arrested a man who escaped probation officers Friday as he was being admitted to a substance abuse treatment facility.
At about 12 p.m., officers say they were called to the treatment center at Second Avenue and South Claremont Street "...to assist Santa Cruz County Probation with locating a prisoner who fled from their custody."
The man, 47-year-old Salvador Velasquez Aguirre, allegedly escaped custody while he was at the center for an intake interview, according to police.

"San Mateo Police immediately established a command post and requested the assistance of allied agencies," police said. "With the assistance of allied agencies, San Mateo Police conducted a swift, thorough and methodical search and located the subject hiding in the area."
Police did not say how long Aguirre was out of custody or where they found him.

Aguirre was in custody for failing to register as a sex offender and there was no threat to the public, police said.
