SAN MATEO, CA — San Mateo police on Tuesday arrested a man on suspicion of multiple crimes, including assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

On Nov. 19, police were notified that California Highway Patrol was chasing a stolen GMC Sierra and had entered San Mateo. Officers responded near the intersection of El Camino Real and Fourth Avenue, where the GMC had stopped.

As officers arrived at the location, they saw a man attempting to enter different businesses in the area, San Mateo police said. The man was confronted and immediately ran. Officers chased the suspect back to the GMC truck. The suspect got into the truck and allegedly drove it at one of the officers, who had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit, police allege.

The man allegedly then drove the truck recklessly over curbs on onto the sidewalk. Several officers pursued the vehicle, with the chase ending as the GMC drove through a fence and into San Mateo Creek, near the 700 block of First Avenue. According to police, by the time officers gathered enough resources to safely approach the truck, the suspect was no longer inside it. A search of the creek and the area was carried out, but the man was not located.

Investigators used surveillance footage and other tools to identify a possible suspect, Joshua Carmelich. An arrest warrant was issued for him and he was taken into custody in Modesto on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, evading police with disregard for public safety, and having a stolen vehicle. Carmelich was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail.
