SAN MATEO, CA — A San Jose man is facing a felony assault charge for firing a round near a 17-year-old boy in San Mateo, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Tuesday.

At around 9 a.m. on Feb. 12, Alfredo Chavez, 45, of San Jose, began following the teen while the boy was walking to catch a bus on the 800 block of North Humboldt Street, prosecutors said. Chavez was reportedly accompanied by an unidentified woman, according to the DA’s office.

The district attorney said that after yelling at the teen, Chavez fired a round close to him. The boy then ran around a corner to safety.
