Mentally Ill Man Stabs Himself, Jumps From Roof In San Mateo

Police said a 48-year-old man has been hospitalized after he stabbed himself, hid on his roof and then jumped from it.

SAN MATEO, CA — A 48-year-old man experiencing a mental health crisis threatened members of his family, stabbed himself and later jumped off his roof Wednesday morning, San Mateo police said.

Police responded shortly after 6 a.m. to the 1200 block of Rhus Street after getting a report of a family disturbance involving a mental health crisis.

Officers found that the man had been experiencing hallucinations, had been violent with family members and was holding a knife, according to police. After learning that the man had stabbed himself and was hiding on the roof of his home, crisis intervention officers negotiated with him for several hours.

Ultimately, the man jumped from the roof and injured himself. Paramedics treated him and he was transported to a local trauma center. There was no word on the man's condition.
