New Chief Tapped For San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department
Ray Iverson, currently deputy fire chief of the department, has spent 28 years in the fire service. He will assume the role on Dec. 27.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — The San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department announced its deputy fire chief, Ray Iverson, will take over the department's top spot after Chief John Healy retires next month. Iverson will assume the role on Dec. 27, after 28 years in the fire service and four years in San Mateo's department.
Iverson joined the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department — which serves Belmont, Foster City and San Mateo — in 2015 as Deputy Fire Marshal, according to a department press release. He became the acting fire marshal in 2017 and deputy chief in 2018. Iverson currently oversees the Bureau of Fire Protection and Life Safety, the Office of Emergency Services, and Fleet and Facilities Management.
"The members of this organization are strong, and I am happy to be amongst such great leaders," Iverson said in the press release. "I am looking forward to serving for many years to come.

The Oakland native was previously a private sector fire service manager and has worked in fire service agencies throughout Northern California.
Iverson holds a bachelor's degree in fire administration from Columbia Southern University and an associate of fire technology degree from Solano Community College. He is pursuing a master's degree in public administration, with a concentration in emergency services management, from Columbia Southern University, according to the press release.

In his new role, Iverson will oversee the nine stations and 154 full-time employees that comprise the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department.
Iverson was chosen by the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department Board.
"Between his experience and passion for service, Chief Iverson will help ensure we maintain the highest level of service to our communities," said Fire Board Chair Joe Goethals, who also serves on the San Mateo City Council. "He's not just out fire chief, he's a member of our community."
