People should not feed deer because deer attract mountain lions and it's illegal in California.

Police said to avoid approaching a mountain lion if one is seen, especially if it is eating or with its offspring.

People should also avoid jogging or hiking through wooded areas during dawn, dusk or at night when mountain lions are most active.

Police advise keeping a close eye on small children when traveling or hiking in wooded areas, and to not run when encountering a mountain lion.

Instead, people should face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving one's arms.
