San Mateo County Inmate's Death Under Investigation

The individual was found unresponsive in his housing unit, possibly from a suicide, officials said.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — An inmate at the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City was pronounced deceased at an area hospital after he was found unreponsive during a security check in his housing pod Thursday at approximately 2 p.m., the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said.

The case is under investigation, but authorities reported suicide as a possible cause of death, the Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau said.

After discovering the person, correctional and county medical staff and the Redwood City Fire Department responded and initiated medical treatment and CPR, prior to the transport to a local hospital, deputies said.

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office withheld the individual's name pending family notification.
