San Mateo County Reports 54 New Coronavirus Cases, No Deaths

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — San Mateo County Health reported 54 additional coronavirus cases Monday.

The latest report brings the countywide case count to 12,565.

The county reported no additional coronavirus-related fatalities Monday, leaving its COVID-19 death toll at 168.

There were 22 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in San Mateo County as of Monday, of which five were being treated in intensive care units.

The latest developments around the region related to the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, as of Monday afternoon include: Most of the Bay Area's counties will move into more-restrictive reopening tiers this week as the state attempts to extinguish its current rise in new coronavirus cases, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday.

A total of 28 counties - including Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Napa, Santa Cruz and Solano counties - will be moved into the most-restrictive "purple tier" Tuesday, part of what Newsom described as the state "pulling the emergency brake" on its reopening plans.

In addition, Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo counties moved into the red tier, the second most-restrictive tier in the system.

Following an announcement on Monday by California Gov. Gavin Newsom that most counties will be moved into more restrictive tiers on the state's COVID-19 tiered reopening system, San Francisco has been pushed from the yellow tier to the red tier.

As a result of being placed in the red tier, Mayor London Breed and Department of Public Health Director Grant Colfax said the city will close non-essential offices and reduce capacity at indoor gyms from 25 percent to ten percent starting on Tuesday.

Gov. Gavin Newsom publicly apologized Monday for attending a birthday party at the French Laundry earlier this month, saying that he contradicted the guidance he's given discouraging social gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle's Alexei Koseff, Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, attended the 50th birthday party for Jason Kinney, a longtime political advisor, on Nov. 6 at the Michelin-starred restaurant in Yountville, located in Napa County.

The dinner included at least 12 people, according to Koseff's report, which Newsom said on Monday was "a larger group than I had anticipated."

There have been 1,040,774 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 18,287 coronavirus-related deaths in California as of Monday night according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The United States had 11,197,791 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 247,142 coronavirus-related fatalities as of Monday night.

There have been 54,967,255 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 1,325,752 deaths reported globally as of Monday night.
