San Mateo County Reports 647 New Coronavirus Cases, No Deaths

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — San Mateo County Health reported 647 additional coronavirus cases Monday.

The latest report, which covers a three-day period going back to Friday, brings the countywide case count to 35,882.

The county reported no additional coronavirus-related fatalities Monday, leaving its COVID-19 death toll at 382.

The county's reported figures include previously unreported data added retroactively.

There were 138 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in San Mateo County as of Monday, of which 29 were being treated in intensive care units.

Elsewhere around the Bay Area and beyond, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation risked the health and safety of thousands of inmates and prison staff last year by transferring potentially COVID-19-positive inmates to San Quentin State Prison, according to a report released Monday by the state's inspector general.

The CDCR and California Correctional Health Care Services, which oversees health care within the state prison system, transferred 189 inmates from the California Institution for Men in Chino between May 28 and 30 of last year amid a coronavirus outbreak at the facility.

According to the report, 67 of the inmates, who had various underlying medical conditions that made them more susceptible to serious illness, were transferred to Corcoran State Prison on May 28 and 122 were sent to San Quentin on May 30 in an effort to protect them from the outbreak in Chino.

However, the report found that the CDCR and CCHCS failed to adequately test the inmates before or after arriving at San Quentin, as well as not properly quarantining inmates with active cases of the virus and contact tracing the cases throughout the prison.

To date, 1,012 coronavirus cases and three deaths have been confirmed at Corcoran and 2,240 coronavirus cases and 28 deaths have been confirmed at San Quentin.

The lobby at Vallejo police headquarters has reopened to the public effective Monday after closing in mid-December out of concerns over the spread of COVID-19, police said.

The lobby at 111 Amador St. will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays with two people allowed inside at a time as long as they are wearing a mask, according to police.

The department's Community Services Section and Code Enforcement office at 2 Florida St. will also be open during the same hours Mondays through Thursdays.

Vallejo police on Dec. 15 closed the lobby amid high numbers of COVID-19 cases locally and are still advising people to use police services by phone or online when possible. A directory of services can be found here.

There have been 3,332,838 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 41,157 coronavirus-related deaths in California as of Monday afternoon according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
