San Mateo Man Nabbed In Peninsula Hit-And-Run: Police

Sheriff's officials say the driver fled the scene following the incident, but witnesses helped them catch the suspect.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — A 41-year-old San Mateo man is accused of hitting a woman as she walked in San Carlos and taking off without stopping. The woman, who was hospitalized following the incident, is expected to fully recover.

According to sheriff's Det. Rosemerry Blankswade, it happened around 6:37 a.m. Thursday along Industrial Road at American Street.

"Witnesses on scene told deputies the suspect vehicle, a lifted 2017 Ford F-250 pickup truck...hit the victim while she was crossing in the crosswalk and fled the scene," Blankswade said in a news release.

The pedestrian, who was identified as a woman in her 60s, was taken to the hospital with injuries described as "non-life-threatening."

As the motorist took off, witnesses took down the license plate of the truck, according to Blankswade. Deputies soon spotted the vehicle parked nearby.

"The vehicle was occupied solely by Humberto Barraza, who was identified by the witnesses as the driver in the hit and run," she said. "Barraza was placed under arrest and booked into the San Mateo County Jail for [felony hit-and-run with injury]."
