This year, McLaughlin is one of multiple fatalities reported at California ski resorts.

A skier died at Mammoth Mountain after falling on one of California's steepest marked trails. He lost his skis and slid headfirst down the slope for hundreds of yards, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Three other skiers died previously at Mammoth recently, Among them was a 30-year-old ski patroller whose death resulted from being stuck in an avalanche.

Rescue crews are racing against time to find the three remaining backcountry skiers out of a group of 15 who went missing in a Sierra Nevada avalanche near Truckee's Castle Peak around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Six skiers have been found so far. The group was on the final day of a three-day trek when the avalanche occurred.
