5 Questions for Musical Theater Star (and Mom!) Susan Zelinsky

It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday, and every single mother out there deserves a high five. It can be a rough road sometimes but everyone has the ability see their own dreams become reality! Mom’s Talk proudly casts the spotlight on a San Rafael mom who is living her dreams with a career in musical theater. Susan Zelinsky, starring as Velma Von Tussle in this years run of Mountain Play’s Hairspray, took a moment out of her busy schedule to answer some questions: 

1.  How long have you been involved in musical theater?

I've been taking voice lessons and doing musical theater since I was a freshman in high school.

2. Is this something you do professionally or is it something for artistic expression?

I'm fortunate to do it professionally, along with other kinds of entertainment, such as performing children's concerts, straight plays, weddings and doing Voice Over (VO).

3. How many children do you have and are they interested in what you do?

I have two girls, five and eight. They listen to the many musical sound tracks we have at home, and have learned all the words to Hairspray, Fiddler on the Roof, The Fantasticks and others. They love music!

4. Have you ever been on hiatus?

I was on hiatus from plays during my pregnancies, but was able to continue singing. When the babies came, I took time off. I didn't want to miss a thing!

5. Will you support your children if they want to follow in your footsteps?

If theater is their dream, then I'll encourage them to go for it. There are many ways to be a working actor/singer, and you don't have to be famous or move to Hollywood to succeed.
