Car Crashes Into Overpass, Closing Highway Lanes Near Richmond-San Rafael Bridge: Police
Bridge engineers are conducting a structural assessment of the overpass, and an estimated time for the lanes to reopen is currently unknown.
SAN RAFAEL, CA — Two eastbound lanes of Interstate Highway 580 in Richmond, between the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge toll plaza and Stenmark Drive, have been closed following a traffic collision that happened early Wednesday morning.
A vehicle crashed into an overcrossing in the area, leading to the closure of the No. 2 and 3 eastbound lanes, Caltrans officials said. The eastbound I-580 on-ramp at Stenmark Drive is also fully closed.
The closures will remain in effect indefinitely while bridge engineers conduct a structural assessment of the overcrossing, Caltrans said. There is currently no estimated time for the lanes to reopen.

Due to the Stenmark Drive on-ramp closure, Caltrans advised residents in that area to detour by driving west on I-580, crossing the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, and looping back toward Richmond.
Motorists should anticipate significant delays on and around I-580 in the area. Drivers are strongly advised to seek alternate routes or allow for extra travel time.
