Council OKs Childcare Contract

Funds preschool for 50 kids at Pickleweed.

The San Rafael City Council Monday night approved a $179,275 contract with the state Department of Education that will continue a preschool program for 50 children at the Pickleweed Children's Center. 

City manager Ken Nordhoff said he was greatly relieved to see the funding continued, considering the state of the California budget. 

The preschool program is for children from 3- to 5-years-old and provides developmentally appropriate educational, health, social and nutritional services to eligible low-income families. according to a city report.

Parent education and participation is also provided.

The program provides a transition for children from disadvantaged families who will be moving on to the public school kindergarten program.
