Demolition Begins At Marin County Mall To Make Way For Housing: Report

A foundational anchor store for the mall is finally being destroyed after closing in 2018.

SAN RAFAEL, CA — The fate of the Sears building at Northgate mall in Terra Linda is sealed, according to a report by the Marin Independent Journal.

Ghilotti Bros. Inc. of San Rafael has begun gutting the structure, anticipating its eventual demolition later in 2026.

This work is an initial step in a larger, multi-phase redevelopment project for the shopping center, the Marin IJ reported.

The plan includes the addition of 1,422 residences, a town square, and new retail and dining establishments.

Sears, which closed in 2018, was a foundational anchor store for the center when it first opened in 1965 as the Northgate Fashion Mall.
