DUI Driver Arrested In Marin County After High-Speed Sonoma County Chase: PD

Police in Sonoma County terminated the pursuit when the driver reached speeds of 95 mph but law enforcement was waiting in Marin County.

NORTH BAY, CA — A man suspected of driving under the influence of drugs early Wednesday was taken into custody in Marin County after leading Petaluma police officers on a high-speed chase, the Petaluma Police Department said.

The incident started shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday when Petaluma officers saw a truck speeding down North McDowell Boulevard, police Sgt. Ryan McGreevy said.

"The driver, later identified as Richard Goldsmith, was speeding and not able to maintain lane control, swerving back and forth between lanes," McGreevy said.

When officers tried to pull him over, Goldsmith, a 40-year-old resident of Santa Rosa, sped southbound on North McDowell toward Lakeville Highway, the sergeant said.

Goldsmith reportedly drove through multiple intersections without stopping, then got onto U.S. Highway 101.

When Goldsmith reached speeds of approximately 95 mph on the 101, police said, the pursuit was called off but the Petaluma Police Department advised surrounding law enforcement agencies about Goldsmith's driving.

"A short time later the Petaluma Police Department was notified that officers and deputies from CHP and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office had located Goldsmith and his vehicle, just off Hwy 101 in San Rafael," McGreevy said.

When officers determined Goldsmith was under the influence of drugs, he was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of felony evading, DUI, and violation of probation, police said.
