Fire station renovations begins for Station No. 57
Alten Construction has been awarded the contract to renovate the San Rafael Fire Department Station 57.

Alten Construction (AltenConstruction.com), a full-service San Francisco Bay Area commercial construction company, has been awarded the contract to renovate the San Rafael Fire Department Station 57.
The proposed 9,855-square-foot two-story fire station fire station will house five on-duty firefighters in a 24-hour shift, increasing its on-duty staffing at this location from three to five.
The core facilities of Fire Station No. 57 have been designed to accommodate six on-duty personnel in the event that additional staffing is required to serve this location and to allow for staff training. The building will have a medical supply cache, public lobby, an accessible restroom, station office, kitchen, dining, dayroom, laundry room and private sleeping quarters with unisex restrooms. The station will also have a three drive-through apparatus bays. The apparatus support spaces include a workshop, medical storage, cleanup room, turnout storage and related janitor facilities.
The design of the project will be completed by the Department of Public Works and incorporate high-quality living quarters for the firefighters, modern and upgraded technology and ventilation and exhaust systems for the apparatus bay. The City of San Rafael Essential Facilities Project includes renovations for Fire Stations 57 and 52.
The building will be designed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’s (LEED) Gold certification. The LEED scoring system provides a metric for measuring how sustainable a structure is. LEED-certified buildings are resource efficient, using less water and energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Located at 3530 Civic Center Drive in San Rafael, the project is scheduled to wrap up in summer 2018.
Currently, 44 fire stations operate in the San Francisco Bay Area. During the update, the station’s current operations, response and coverage will be deployed from a temporary location at Station No. 53 at 30 Joseph Court in San Rafael.
