Gas Line Rupture Prompts Evacuations In San Rafael: Police

SAN RAFAEL, CA — A gas line rupture prompted a shelter-in-place order and multiple evacuations Wednesday in downtown San Rafael, according to the San Rafael Police Department.

The order covers Fifth Avenue between A and C streets and B Street between Fourth Street and Mission Avenue.

At 10:01 a.m., police announced they also closed Fifth Avenue between A and C streets and B Street between Fourth Street and Mission Avenue. Mission Avenue between Wilson Court and C Street was later added to the closure area. Motorists were urged to avoid downtown and use alternate routes, including Second, Third and Fourth streets, as well as Mission Avenue where accessible.

Police later expanded the response at 9:43 a.m. by ordering evacuations at Westamerica Bank, 1108 Fifth Avenue, and 1210 Fifth Avenue.

People at the bank were directed to evacuate north toward Mission Avenue or A Street, while those at 1210 Fifth Avenue were told to evacuate toward Mission Avenue or C Street. Officials warned evacuees to avoid the intersection of Fifth Avenue and B Street, where crews were responding to the gas leak.

Officials urged anyone inside buildings within the affected area to remain indoors, close and secure all windows and doors, and turn off outside ventilation until the order is lifted.

The gas line was accidentally ruptured near Fifth Avenue and B Street, police said.

The San Rafael Police Department, San Rafael Fire Department and PG&E responded to the scene and were working to shut off the gas.

Authorities asked the public to avoid the area while emergency crews responded.
